MK vs DC universe = Not a bad game.

Box Art

General comments:
What do you get when you combine Mortal Kombat and DC characters together?
The answer, a suprisingly fun/complex game. Not bad of a game.

Midway makes and tries their best at making a fun and complex game for everybody to play and they succeed. The Characters maybe the reason people will buy the game but the games system engine is what would make it the best MK game thus far.

Graphics: 9.5 / 10

What can I say about the graphics? It is really well done.
The stages although not as interactive as Tekken or Soul Calibur, it does its job.
There are also statues or blocks that can hit you when you get sent flying.

The other cool feature about the graphics are the characters visualization during battle.
When you or the opponent gets hit multiple times, the system will displays them with cuts, burns, black eyes, among other things. This feature should be considered with other fighting games. We can’t have beaten them so much and they still look the same. It’s feels more realistic this way.

I can also only find good things about the Story Mode movies. Mouth movement with body angles make you notice that Midway did take the time to make this game almost perfect (I said almost).

The only problem I probably got is the Masculinity feature on every male character. They show it with so much detail that you can see their veins. Too much detail is not good at times. Although I don’t have any problems with the way the female characters were rendered. Especially Kitana and Catwoman. Meow!!

Music/Sound: 9 / 10
The sound/music in games today require perfection. It is a mandatory.
Whether it be fighting or any other generic games, sounds brings or hooks players like us to play longer. MK vs DC was no different and was close to perfection regarding sound.

Story sounds
The voice actors were believable in relaying the story.
Jokers laugh, Batmans calm but persuasive voice, Diana’s cry for assistance all blended the in well.
We can’t forget about the MK characters as well, I say they did better than the DC’s voices actors. Probably because most of them had mask and make their voice match the character like Raiden (thunder sound), Baraka with the big teeth in his mouth. This made the story watchable and you just can’t wait to hear or progress through the next scene.

Battle sounds
Hearing “Finish Him” sound byte just brought back memories.
The characters getting hit, then they yell louder if its a more damaging move.
The grunts and sound effects of walls or pavement breaking.
Their own sound bytes when they do their respective moves.
All top-notch.

Stage Sounds
Not going to write alot about this. Just want to mention that the soundtrack sounded like it was from the Matrix or Requim of Spirit remix.

Controls: 7 / 10
Oh Xbox Controller why do suck so much when it comes to fighting games.
What can I say, my Down notation turns into db or df. That’s not right.
There are mods that can make your XBOX controller into a reliable fighting game controller.
Google that.

Pad
Sucks, inputs wrong commands at times but it is doable.
You can use the control stick but it’s hard to accomodate that far away from the handle.
When playing fighting games, we all know you need a good grip of the controller and holding the stick makes it difficult. Not the games fault.

The button layout is fine. It works for me.
My biggest complaint was that I had to go to the Manual Booklet to learn how to do RAGE.
(The rating was minused 3 points because of this, that’s how much RAGE is important) You have to press L2+R2 or LT+RT to activate. I was halfway through the story until I figured this out. I was pressing everything. Explanation would have been nice since RAGE was the basis of the STORY mode.
For every fighting game I have played, they atleast show you which button does what. Sorry for the rant but a game this complex needs proper explanation and they did not make the controls known in beginning. Big NO NO if you want to get people to play longer.

I didn’t try it with a stick yet but by the looks of it, you have to Bind your buttons. It is not the most friendly of button configuration out there. Midway could do a better configuration to please the newbies and experts alike.

Gameplay:
Single-player – 8 / 10
Story Mode was fun but kind of annoying at times.
You progress through the game using different characters and learn their stories.
The good thing is you learn how each character fights. The bad thing is that you literally have to learn that current character’s moves or else you’ll keep losing. I just want to watch the movie, why is it so hard. Why do I have to learn a character I will never use in my whole MK vs DC experience?
Of course to make it worse, the CPU was good enough that they take full advantage of you not knowing how to use a certain character.

I must digress that I still enjoyed beating the hell out of characters that were in my way to finish the story. Although there were more losses than wins in my opinion. LOL

Multi-player
I tried online but I got laggy. The game is new so nobody really knew how to play properly yet.
I’m going to try playing against a friend and see the value of Multiplayer. I can only assume that it would be fun. I mean if either of us knows how to play then it would be fun.

Replay value, longevity: 8 / 10
Single-player
I went through the Story Mode twice. DC and then MK. I got annoyed somewhere in the middle when I have to fight 3 opponents in a row with a character I really hated. Shang Tsung (I hated him since MKII).

After playing Story Mode, i’d say that would be it for that mode.
The replay value lies in the Arcade mode to learn people’s endings or Practice mode to just learn how to play properly.

Multi-player
I haven’t tried it yet but I’d say because it’s a fighting game, the replay value would be high.
Especially in this newb times. Midway really tried their best to make it a good game.

Overall GAme Rating: 8 / 10

Note: If you want to compare it with another game, think of it as MvC2/KOF/KI combined with SFIV, SCIV, and Tekken. It has pre-defined combos so you have options. While on the system side, it has Just Frames, Advanced Combos, Combo Breakers and many unknown strategies. It has the potential to be up there like the rest of our other favorite fighting games but just needs players to give it a chance.

Guys, keep in mind that this is how the game is to me.
You also may say that I am missing information. I thought that I wouldn’t go into too much detail about the system as of yet. I’ll keep you guys posted. Right now, all I can say is pick up the game because its good. Can’t help but to laugh at Superman being burned by Scorpion. LOL

Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe

Posted on Nov 14, 2008 01:25:20 PM

So what happens when two worlds collide to battle for Supremecy?

Hopefully a great game. :)

Whether your excited or not about the game, MK vs DC Universe will be released on Sunday Nov. 16th. It will be released for PS3 and XBOX 360. I know most of you really just watch the Opening and Ending sequences from past MK games. I mean did people really play the other games seriously? Regardless, we should give this game the benefit of the doubt. Midway did promise a newly revamped system.

Once it has been released, I’ll give you a very informant review and then you can decide for yourself if it’s worth to play or not. Don’t start the Hate Bandwagon yet.

Here are the box arts for both systems:
PS3

XBOX 360

Expect a few Tutorial vids regarding the new system among other things when the game is released.
For now, enjoy Scorpion doing a Fatality on Batman.

I never thought I’d see this happen in any type of medium but altogether it was worth watching.
